Before and After: A So-So Spare Bedroom Becomes a Serene and Tropical Boho Nursery

Big life changes often come with big home changes. A new work-from-home job might necessitate a more permanent office space; a new stage in a relationship might mean making room for a combined living space. And a new kid on the way might mean converting a guest room into a kid's room.
Over the summer, soon-to-be parent Ella Faulkner of @housenumber_6 and her partner, Ollie, started to convert her orange guest room into a nursery for their baby on the way. "It was quite a dark spare bedroom but very rarely used as one," Ella says of the before. "It mainly housed the washing until I could be bothered to put it away."
Ella knew she wanted to change the orange on the wall. "Today we say goodbye to the pumpkin room," she wrote on Instagram when she painted the room, which was always just a bit brighter than she preferred.
"We wanted to keep the room quite neutral," Ella says, and she achieved that with soft green paint (Graham and Brown's Oh Crumbs) and a tropical tree wallpaper (Graham and Brown's Paradise Jungle Palm Bespoke Mural), which are her favorite parts of the redo.
"I can't believe how good it looks in the nursery now," Ella says. "The green paint and tropical mural make it feel so much more relaxing and calming, perfect for a baby's room."
To add to the relaxing and neutral, boho feel, Ella selected light wood and rattan accessories, like the mirror maintained from before, the hot air balloon pendant (you can find similar ones on Etsy), and the scandi-style wooden crib.
For seating, Ella refurbished a dated and dusty pink armchair, transforming it into a neutral khaki-colored tufted wingback one. "I am over the moon with how it's turned out," she wrote on Instagram.
The whole space is a cute, calming space that can grow with a child for years to come. "I'm so happy with how it turned out," Ella says.
